Fibre Optic Cable Splicer



Scope:   Primary responsibilities include splicing fiber optic cable in both outdoor and indoor settings; reading, creating, and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams; managing outside plant (OSP) activities at and around assigned work sites; creating and maintaining accurate splicing and field notes; supporting project timelines; and creating accurate staking sheets for assigned projects. Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned. Many tasks occur in the field and may require overtime, including evening and night shifts, weekends, and holidays. Travel may be required depending on the business needs.


  • Safely identifying and splicing various types and sizes of cable
  • Splice fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables
  • Construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing
  • Complete fiber optic testing with Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Power Meters and Live Fiber Identifiers.
  • Troubleshoot fiber optic networks as required, including emergency restoration projects.
  • Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics and diagrams.
  • Ability to read and interpret splicing diagrams/blueprints
  • Perform work in accordance with industry standards.
  • Be familiar with RUS standards, read and follow design engineer’s instructions and specifications, maintain the scope of work on the project and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Prepare engineering field notes.
  • Interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field with clarity and detail and make recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies.
  • Enter and maintain outside plant records.
  • Participate in engineering, permit and construction processes to support project contracts.
  • Perform routine maintenance. Recognize and repair route issues including, but not limited to Hand Hole cleanup.


Two years’ experience of construction with Outside Plant Telecom. Desirable work experience includes project lead responsibility. Must have a valid driver’s license (preference given to Class 3 and above), Familiarity with the tools, equipment and techniques of the trade. In depth understanding of technology based services, products and networking. Preference will be given to those with experience, supervisory experience a plus.


  • Understanding of how to read fiber optic schematics and design drawings, with a complete understanding of fiber counts and color codes.
  • Experience with fusion splicing both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables including the ability to place a mid-sheath splice (Midstrip).
  • Knowledge of EXFO test equipment would be an asset
  • Know how to place a mid-sheath splice.
  • Working knowledge, experience, and proficiency of current computerized operation, and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best construction practices, practical facility entrances and surface restoration.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given.
  • Ability to multitask, troubleshoot and stay organized under pressure.
